This table shows you what HbA1c you should aim for:

 

  • Without diabetes, range is 20-41 mmol/mol (4-5.9%)

  • With diabetes, HbA1c level of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) is good control.

  • Greater risk of hypoglycemia, target HbA1c of 59 mmol/mol (7.5%) to reduce the risk of hypos.

 

Everyone should have individual goals. We are all different and need different targets.

Week in advance

This is a check up that takes place at least once a year.

This helps the nurses and doctors catch up and see how you are doing.

If you are younger or have complications you may have more than one a year.

What to prepare...

It is like the body's own glucose diary. It gives an average reading for the last three months.

  • Blood tests (including Hba1c)
