There are 4 ways of helping to control glucose before and during exercise...

  • Take in extra carbohydrates to match the amount that will be/ has been used up in the exercise.

    • This can be done with all methods of treatment. Eat small amount before, drink fruit juice during or eat after.

  • Decrease the amount of insulin taken with the meal before exercise - eat 1-2 hours before.

    • This can be done with pens and pumps. The amount decreased by will depend on the intensity and type of exercise.

  • Decrease the basal insulin - before during and after exercise.

    • This can only be done on pumps, set a temporary basal. The amount decreased by will depend on the intensity and type of exercise.

  • A combination of the 3 above
