Test before you drive!!!

Sugar of 5 to drive!!

Test every two hours.

Your blood glucose should be above 5mmol/L if not it is recomended that you eat something. If it is below 4mmol/L then you CAN'T drive.

You will have to fill out certain forms depending on the type of vehicle licence you are applying for and how you treat your diabetes.

Follow this link and find the correct form.

You will probably get a 1, 2 or 3 year restricted licence.

Insurance companies should not discriminate because you have diabetes.

However if you have a restricted licence, then your premiums may be higher.

But shop around, you should be able to find one that is not much different.

Diabetes does not stop you from driving but there are some rules and regulations that you have to stick to. And more paper work to fill out.

If you test before and test every two hours you can avoid having hypos behind the wheel.

Have a hypo kit in your car and a blood glucose machine.

  • Move to passenger side

  • Treat hypo

  • Should not drive for another 45 min

Hypos affect your judgment for 45min after.

You must inform the DVLA if you have a hypo that needs assistance or if you become hypo unaware
