Having hypos or having to test your glucose in lessons is some peopl's nightmare.

Telling your teachers that you are diabetic means you could just ask discretely to leave the classroom for 2 min where you can do a glucose or eat some food.

Most teachers are fine for you to eat in class if needs be.

My school had a box in the reception area where they kept dextrose and gluco gel, just in case I forgot/ran out.

They also kept a spare penfill of insulin in the staff fridge again incase.

This would be down to the discretion of the school.

I would urge you to tell the staff

Who do you tell? Do you tell anyone?

  • Your teachers

  • Headmaster

  • Nurse of the school (first aider)

  • Reception

Telling people that you have diabetes does not mean they will treat you differently.

It helps them understand why you might need to eat in class, or excuse yourself to get food or do a blood sugar.

Also if you need to attend medical appointments they will understand.

It allows everyone to be on the same page

You finished your GCSEs and got your results

And now you are off to sixth form college

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Sixth form college is similar to senior school, but also different.

You still have lessons, most days 9-3, you still have assemblies you have to go to.

But you have more freedom, more work, harder exams and more independence

First day...

  • Pencil case and pens

  • Spare paper

  • Test books and exercise books for your subjects

  • House keys

  • Purse, money, students card, college card

  • Lunch

  • Planner

  • Blood glucose machine

  • Insulin Pen, with plenty of insulin

  • Dextrose (Hypo kit)

  • Glucose gel

  • Change of infusion set (Pump only)

Packing your Bag

Telling the school...

Other ideas...

Time management

You may not be in school 9-3 so you may lose some routine

Be sure to set alarms to help remember BMs and insulin

Lunch

This may not be provided or you can go out

Make sure to eat responsibly and be careful of the sweet shop on the walk back

Stress

This can be higher in 6th form, especially around exams

Stress can raise blood glucose

Be sure to keep an extra eye on glucose levels in stressful periods
