  • Definitely take food in with you.

  • Plan a break to do a blood glucose (1-2min)

  • Plan to do insulin if needed. Prepare your pen before the exam so it can be done quickly

  • Get to your exam with plenty of time.

  • Bring your hypo kit with you

  • Eat a good breakfast

  • Do a blood glucose before the exam, if low eat a snack

  • If you feel low during the exam eat a small snack.

  • After the exam do a blood glucose and treat glucose as required.

  • Reminding/Tell invigilator you are diabetic, so they know why there is food, if you have a hypo.

  • Stress of revision and the exam can sneak up on anyone. Without even feeling stressed.

  • Stress can cause your blood sugar to rise.

 

 

  • Keep an extra eye on your blood sugar.

  • Check that sugars are not going to high and treat appropriately.

 

  • Speak to teachers. Explain that you will need food on your desk in the exam and a blood glucose machine.

  • Discus what will happen if you have a hypo in the exam. Extra time?

Exams can be difficult, whether you are sitting GCSE's or your finals at university, fitting in all the revision you need, the sleepless night before the exam and the exam itself.

Having diabetes just adds an extra complication. What do you take with you, stress sending your sugars high, having a hypo during your exam. Nightmare!!!

Day Of The Exam...

  • Get a good night sleep.

  • Try and go to bed on a good blood sugar.

  • Pack your bag for your exam.

  • Pack your hypo kit

  • Plan meals - does your exam fall where you normally eat, should you eat before or after?

  • Plan insulin injections - does your exam fall when you normally do insulin, can you do it before during or after?
