Hypos...

Hypoglycaemia is where the level of sugar in the blood falls too low: less than 4 mmol/L.

 

 

  • Feeling shaky

  • Feeling sweaty

  • Hungry

  • Tired

  • Blurred vision

  • Loss of concentration

  • Moody

 

Symptoms vary for everyone.

Get to know your own symptoms and body.

Symptoms

Causes

  • Excess insulin

  • Missed meal

  • Unplanned exercise

  • Not enough carbs

  • Drinking alcohol

  • BM too low before bed

  • Sometimes you cant find a cause

Treatment

15 - 20 grams of fast acting carbs

  • Small sugary drink (non-diet)

  • 4 Glucose tablets

  • Handful of sweets (jelly babies)

  • Carton of pure fruit juice

  • Glucose gel

Re check 15 - 20 min after

 

Do not use chocolate or biscuits to treat hypos, the fat slows the absorption of the sugar.

Always carry hypo kits on you wherever you are.

Test before going to sleep to help avoid night time hypos.

Don't miss meals or snacks.

If you begin having hypos with no symptoms talk to your diabetic team

 

Hypers...

Hyperglycaemia is where the suger in the blood rises too high: above 9 mmol/L.

  • Passing more urine than normal

  • Thirsty

  • Headaches

  • Tiredness

 

These symptoms can also vary for each person and will come about at different levels for everyone depending on how tight your control is.

Symptoms

Causes

  • Missed insulin

  • Eaten too many carbs for insulin

  • Stressed

  • Illness

  • Over treating hypo

  • Anxiety of hypos

Treatment

  • Take some extra insulin

  • Drink lots of sugar free drinks (water)

  • Test for ketones

  • Re test to check it is coming down

 

If your BM's are continuously high then discuss with diabetic team, you may have to change something more permenantly.

Don't miss insulin 

If you are staying high or notice a pattern of hypers contact your diabetic team

If you are ill make sure to check ketones
